Blog - About the Nintendo Wii
The
Wii is a home game console from Nintendo. It is the successor of the
GameCube and was released in November 2006.
The Wii features a motion-sensitive controller which looks like a
remote control. The Wiimote, as it is called allows you to point at
objects at screen and it can also detect movement.
The Wii is backward compatible with all GameCube games. You can also
purchase and play games for older consoles such as the NES, Super
NES, Nintendo 64, Sega Mega Drive/Genesis and NEC's
TurboGrafx-16/PC-Engine.
The Wii is currently outselling both the Xbox 360 and the Ps3.
Wii is just
GameCube 1.5
Many critics say
that the Wii is just an enhanced version of the GameCube and has
been dubbed by some as GameCube 1.5. Some even claim that Wii
performance is not up to par with the original Xbox.
In a sense, its true that the Wii is just GameCube 1.5. It's not as
big a leap in technology as PS2 to PS3 is. Nintendo has stated in
the past that the Wii is just 1.5 to 2 times more powerful than the
GameCube. Many components of Wii hardware such as the CPU and GPU
are said to be just overclocked GameCube parts and are not even
at-par with the Xbox.
Most Wii games today don't look any better than last-gen PS2 or GC
games and many Xbox games look better than Wii games. But little by
little, developers are starting to take advantage of the Wii's
capabilities so we will start to see better-looking games in the
future. Mario Strikers Charged looks significantly better than the
GameCube edition and hopefully other developers will follow their
example.
The Wii also offers a lot of advancements over the GameCube,
starting with the motion controls. It also has built-in 512MB NAND
flash memory for game saves, WiFi, USB ports, SD card reader and
Bluetooth so it is definitely a step-up from the GameCube.
Nintendo says that the Wii is not meant to compete with the Xbox 360
or the Ps3. It has stated many times in the past that they are after
a different demographic. Its not just about graphics and specs
anymore, its about the experience gamers can get when playing the
Wii. |
