Blog - Wii Semi-Bricking Problems

When you play a game from another region, it is possible to "brick" your Wii. This is because some games contain firmware updates which are meant for its region only.

If you update your console through a game from another region, you won't be able to access the Wii Settings Page. This is called "bricking or semi-bricking" your Wii. You can only fix this by updating the console to a newer firmware from your own region.

To prevent yourself from bricking your Wii, follow these three steps:

1. Check the Wii Region Compatibility List before playing games from another region.
2. Use WiiBrickBlocker to remove the firmware update inside the game.
3. Always update to the latest firmware of your region using the WiiConnect24 service.

These steps should keep your console safe from bricking.

Fixing A Bricked Wii

Scenario: Paul is so excited to play Mario Strikers Charged(USA) on his Japan(NTSC-J) console that he didn't bother to use WiiBrickBlocker. He thinks he's safe because he's got the latest 2.2J firmware.

Paul inserts the game, it asks for something in Japanese but he can't understand it. His console restarts after the update and he is able to play the game without any problem.

Problem: Paul wants to play online, so he tries to go into the Wii Settings to add his Wi-Fi connection. The problem is that he cannot enter the Wii Settings Page. Some error comes up about Opera not being able to open the page.

Diagnosis: Paul's Wii is bricked/semi-bricked. He should have used WiiBrickBlocker or checked the Wii Region Compatibility List before playing the game.

Having the latest 2.2J firmware does not mean he's safe because the 2.2U was released later.

Paul can still play games on his Wii. But he cannot access the Wii Settings Page.

Solution: Paul needs to wait for a newer firmware to come out to fix his bricked/semi-bricked Wii. In this case, he needs to wait for the 3.0J update to be included in a game so he can update his Wii with it.

Even if the update has been released in WiiConnect24, its useless because he cannot access the Wii Settings Page so he can't connect to Wi-Fi or WiiConnect24.

Once he's updated to 3.0J, his Wii should be back to normal and he should be able to access the Wii Settings with no problem.
